Sound control mac m18/22/2023 FW800/400 / USB 3.0 / eSATA w/built-in DVD Burner, USB hub, & SD reader." I use this to provide a backup disk for TimeMachine backups, and also as a CD/DVD reader and to provide additional USB ports. However, once it goes to sleep and needs to be awakened, those speakers show up as a possibility in the Sound Preferences panel, but no output (alert sounds or other audio) goes to them: the only way to get audio out is to direct it to the Mini's own speakers or to an external (low quality) Bluetooth speaker.īUT: I have an external drive unit connected to the Mini via a USB 3.0 cable: "3.0TB NewerTech miniStack MAX 7200RPM 64MB Cache Storage Solution. First, it has become clear that the Mac Mini will always find the speakers in my 5K display (Thunderbolt 3 port) when starting up (or restarting). I think I have more or less identified the problem. The audio output, however, essentially never works. The machine does sometimes have trouble figuring out which display is primary, or even waking up the primary (5K) display when waking from sleep, but usually this works. Once or twice over the month of so I've had this system, I should say, I did get some sound, but not for long and never after waking the machine from sleep. I have made sure that the audio level on the display (set locally on the display) is quite high enough to be heard, but I don't get any sound. The LG 4K secondary display actually doesn't have any speakers, but the 5K one does, and that's what I want to use. I can choose any of these via sound preferences, but only if I choose the builtin speakers do I get any output. Both show up in sound preferences (both via Display Port), as does a little external speaker ("USB PnP Sound Device" via USB. I have two displays connected: an LG 5K ultra wide via Thunderbolt 3 port, and an LG 4K via HDMI. My new Mac Mini (MacOS 10.14.3) won't produce audio output to anything except its internal speakers.
